Cigarette does something rare with their music in that they do less with more. There are six members of the band, Jonathan Howard, Richard Howard, Evan Napala, Johnny Ward, Ben Brown and Drew Hagelin, all of whom may be playing, at any given time, guitar, drums, viola, trumpet, piano or Rhodes. Yet, Cigarette doesn’t sound like an overblown rock orchestra. Their songs have a minimalist, almost catatonic effect, as if the listener has stumbled into a dream or some other ethereal plane. The band sounds as if they’ve effectively soundtracked a nature walk or a dream. It’s powerful, yet soft-spoken.
